Harrison M. Beardsley papers, 1861-1862.

Civil War letters, 26 Oct. 1861 - 16 Aug. 1862, written by Beardsley from locations in coastal South Carolina and addressed to his parents, John C. and Harriet M. Beardsley, at Herrick, Bradford County, Pa.; S.C. places represented include Hilton Head and Beaufort; letters relate Beardsley's opinions on the progress of the war and his observations of coastal South Carolina. Other topics discussed include army food (2 Dec. 1861), Christmas in camp (24 Dec. 1861), England's diplomatic support of the Confederacy (9 Jan. 1862), daily camp regimen (18 Jan. 1862), and Federal use of African- Americans in the cultivation of sea island cotton and other agricultural staples. Letters dating from July 1862 indicate that the 50th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, had relocated to Virginia to join the 9th Army Corps, Burnside's Division. Several letters written on stationery with patriotic letterhead, including one featuring the likeness of George B. McClellan.
